Leap Year Essay

In the movie "Leap Year", the movie focuses on the protagonist, a young woman named Anna. Throughout her exciting journey, she is accompanied by the antagonist of the movie, a young Irish pub owner named Declan. On their way to meet Anna's long-time boyfriend Jeremy, the two experience the ups and downs of travel. Whether it be Anna's determination to propose to Jeremy, or Declan's unpredictable feelings, the events that these two go through on their way to Dublin, Ireland makes this movie a must see for audiences of all ages.

Starting off in Boston, Massachusetts, Jeremy is about to leave to Dublin for a cardiologist convention. When Anna went dress shopping with her friend, she heard what started the entire journey. Her friend tells her that she saw Jeremy walking out of a very high end jewelery store, usually used for engagement rings. Assuming a proposal, and hoping for the best, she tells her father of the upcoming engagement. This is an example of foreshadowing because she's predicting what will happen in the future. Later, her and Jeremy go to to dinner the night before he leaves for Dublin. Instead of a ring, he gifts her a pair of diamon earrings. Disappointed, and a little heart broken, she accepts the gift and acts as if she wasn't expecting anything. During dinner, he gets a phone call. He has to leave for Dublin earlier then he was supposed to. The two also are planning on moving into a very high-end apartment together, so Anna was expecting a proposal sometime soon. The apartment complex was very hard to get into, and the sellers only wanted the best of the best to buy it. After Jeremy left, Anna tells her father about what happened. Her father tells her about how his grandmother proposed to his grandfather on Leap Year Day. Coming up with the idea to propose to Jeremy instead of waiting for him to, she tells her father, and departs the next day to the airport.

Almost to Dublin, she finds out that all flights have been cancelled because of a storm. Ignoring her rational thoughts, she find a very small fisherman boat that is on its way to Dublin. After barely making it through the terrible storm, she reaches land. She did not land anywhere near Dublin, so she hunts for a phone or a taxi cab service to get her there. Finding a tiny village, she walks into a small pub and asks to use the telephone. The man behind the bar, Declan, points her to a very old telephone. When she asks for the number for a taxi cab service, he hands her a card. After dialing the number, she begins to ask for a taxi. He had given her the number to the pub, and tells her that he will take her to Dublin if she pays him. After insisiting he was the only "taxi" service anywhere near, she agrees. The two then set off to Dublin in Declan's small red car. The journey led them to the country side, where the car was then lost. Walking miles and miles, they end up in another small town. Taking trains, buses, and cars, the two finally reach Dublin. The two attended a wedding, where Anna confessed her love for him while drunk. The two end up falling asleep on a bench in the city. The next morning, Anna wakes up before Declan. She gets up and looks at the bus, and leaves. Declan then wakes up when he hears the bus drive away. Alone, he watches the bus drive off. Anna then appears with coffee and all of her things, she never left. The two head off to the hotel that Jeremy was staying at. After their reunion, Jeremy ends up proposing to Anna in the hotel. Declan doesn't respond, and leaves before she gives Jeremy her answer. Accepting the proposal, the two head back home. Anna, of course, still thinks of Declan, but now lives with Jeremy in the new apartment. During the engagement party, Jeremy tells Anna and her friend that the only reason he proposed was because the seller of the apartment wanted to know if they were. This is an example of irony. Anna, completely dumb-founded, says nothing as Jeremy walks off to talk to Anna's guests. Anna, practically falling apart on the inside, pulls the fire alarm to get everyone to leave. As Jeremy is grabbing a few important things to him, she disappears. She flew to the Declan's pub, and confessed her love for him out loud in the middle of the room. He didn't respond, but simply walked away, barely giving a reaction. Broken hearted and lost, she leaves the pub. Walking to the near by cliffs, she realizes what just happened. Declan then appears, and proposes to her with his grandmother's ring. The two get married, and adventure where ever life takes them together.
