4.2 COGNITIVE AND INTELLECTUAL SKILLS

Students will develop intellectual skills, such as:

• A critical awareness to undertake analysis of complex, incomplete or contradictory areas of knowledge and communicate their understanding effectively, organising thoughts and assumptions and evaluating evidence appropriately. This will be evidenced in the ability to communicate outcomes effectively in both visual and oral communication

• Synthesise information into a conceptual overview that draws on the innovative use of knowledge and understanding of international management.

• Critically evaluate research and develop knowledge and understanding to argue alterative approaches to theories and models from use of capable critical analysis. This will be evidence through the learner developing a level of conceptual understanding and analytical judgement of functional, strategic and socio-political issues in the international business arena

• Solve problems using originality and initiative in autonomous and collaborative ways, identifying and appraising options, implementing and reviewing suitable decisions.

• Make decisions based on reasoned arguments about the value of theory in context and incorporating critical reflection.

• Plan and implement tasks having made decisions about complex and unpredictable situations in the international context. Successful engagement in research and intelligent problem solving providing evidence that the learner is developing independent learning ability. This will be part of a reflection on the skills developed from the group process and the individual personal development plan.

4.3 BEHAVIOURAL SKILLS

• Self evaluation: through reflection on learner's behaviour and actions together with their impact on others.

• Communication: confidently and competently in academic and international environments

• Problem solving: using a variety of problem solving tools and methods both autonomously and collaboratively.

• Collaborative working: both as a team member and leader, clarifying tasks and making best use of the capabilities of others, negotiating and handling conflict with confidence and sensitivity to the value of diversity.

• Managing information: ability to research with the minimum of guidance through transcript, electronic means, and personal interaction.

• Self management: understanding and appreciating own capacity, organising priorities efficiently and exercising initiative and personal responsibility

• Learning: using continuous self reflection on practice and experiences to develop a sustained approach to ongoing personal development.

• Ethical behaviour: recognising ethical situations and applying personal and organisational ethics to situations and people.

• Influence and challenge to stimulate creative thinking and encourage change.

• Handle a complex, changing and unpredictable international environment whilst grasping an overview of the issues relating to ethical practice.

The development of these behavioural and transferable skills will be facilitated through lectures, case study seminars and e-activities. The unit will use all available resources to focus particularly on research, information gathering, evaluation and analytical/problem solving skills suitable for international management development and practice.

The interpretation of the key issues in relevant case studies will help in further developing students' communication and group working skills. The seminars and on line discussions will facilitate important elements of team working, and the case study presentations and individual written reports further develop presentation and report writing skills.

The important skills of relationship building and effective interaction within diverse groups and treating group members' values and beliefs and opinions with respect will be further developed by undertaking
