Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Today I would like to talk about James Byron Dean who was a legendary film star of his generation and died at an early age

Childhood (fotos auch von mutter vater tante onkel farm)

James Dean was born on February 8, 1931, in Marion, Indiana, he was the only child of Winton and Mildred (Wilson) Dean. His father was a dental technician. He had a close relationship to his mother who enrolled him in tap dance lessons at the College of Dance and Theatre at the age of three, and taught him to play the violin. When Dean was six years old he moved to Santa Monica, California together with his mom and dad.

When his mom died of cancer in July 1940 it was a loss he would not recover from all of his life. His father decided to send him to Fairmount, Indiana, to live with his uncle Marcus and aunt Ortense Winslow. He helped them with their daily farm work and had a carefree life. He liked swimming and ice-skating, and was interested in cars. He played on the high school basketball team and was very good at debate and drama.

When James had graduated from school in 1949, he moved to Los Angeles, California, and lived with his father and stepmother for a short time. He attended Santa Monica City College and majored in pre-law, but it was drama he had set his heart on. A year later he transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles and made friends with actor James Whitmore. He then obtained a small part in the television drama: Hill Number One.

Soon Dean left college and had a job as a parking lot attendant. (foto ?) Whenever it was possible he participated in auditions. In 1951, after having acted small parts he left Hollywood for New York. There, in 1952 and 1953 he was given a number of small roles.

Then his career started. He did television plays and some more Broadway productions. But his colleagues said that he was not easy to work with. Dean was not able to repeat a gesture, move, or speech the same way he was told. Despite all this he won the important Daniel Blum Theatre World Award for "best newcomer" of the 1953 to 1954 season for his role in The Immoralist.

Director Elia Kazan, who Dean knew from Actors Studio days, offered him a part in the film East of Eden in March 1954. James was picked for two more parts. First he finished filming Rebel Without a Cause, with Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood in June 1955 then he began to work on Giant. He costarred in this movie with Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. When the work for Giant was completed in September and Dean was planned to start rehearsing for a new play, "The Corn Is Green" he had a few days free time in which he decided to do some car racing.
