  1. Derek’s firm selling Derek to the client as an “SAP” expert though he hadn’t even seen the software before:

First, it is unethical to lie to the customer and portray Derek as an expert when he is not. Second, they are charging the company for a product that they are not receiving by portraying Derek as an expert, which is fraud. The company that Derek works for should have given him proper training for the software or sent someone else that already had the knowledge like the managers he replaced. The customer is paying for an “expert” and that is not what they are getting.

  1. The unpredictable well-dressed purchasing manager:

The head of purchasing whose name is Mike has many behaviors that serve as clues that he is living beyond his means and that there might be fraud happening with him. Of course, there is his appearance, it says that he wore expensive suits and liked to talk about his clothes. He drives a very expensive car that someone make his salary probably shouldn’t be able to afford.

The next thing that is suspicious about Mike is his behavior described as “Jekyll and Hyde” which makes you think that he does not want Derek to get to close to him and that he may have something to hide. The other thing I found interesting is that they said he never took vacations which is one of the sign that fraud may be occurring. People who are committing fraud do not want to leave records and documents unguarded. They want to always be there to cover their tracks.

The final thing I noticed was his relationship with the vendors, when employee and vendor have too close of relationships there is a greater chance of inside deals being struck between them. By inside deal I mean things like no bid contracts and in exchange Mike could be receiving kickbacks from the vendor.
