The Writer’s World: Sentences and Paragraphs, 4th edition

ISBN 9781269993371

Instructor’s Approach:

Welcome to ENGL 099 - Pre-College English! As your instructor, I will support your efforts to develop your reading and writing skills that will enhance your ability to communicate effectively. In this course you will explore grammar rules and writing strategies necessary to develop skills with the Writing Process so that you can produce a well written paper. For example, as we consider different methods of gathering your writing thoughts, we will explore Gabriele Rico’s theory of clustering, a form of brainstorming for writers.

Throughout this course, you will continue to refine and practice reading and writing skills. Through discussions critiques with your peers, you will focus strategies for reading, mechanics and syntax, and written expression. Your efforts will produce a paper, as well as a number of short assignments that demonstrate the growth of your writing skills. Though much of your work will be individual, you will have opportunities to share in class discussion with your class peers. Strengthening your communications skills, as well as contributing constructive criticism will be the goal of this course.

Written communication is the key to success across all disciplines and work environments. Regardless of your field of study, written communication is a necessity and I want to provide you with practical and useful skills that you will need to succeed in the workplace. What you learn in ENGL 099 - Pre-College English will help you succeed in ENGL101 and all your Bryant & Stratton classes and also your careers. Throughout this class, it is essential that you learn that writing is a PROCESS. Writing is never perfect the first time through – and that’s perfectly normal! You will not produce a perfect paper on your first try; however, it can be achieved! I want to help you discover the tenacity in yourself to keep writing, revising, and working towards a polished final product. With this goal in mind, I want to foster a classroom environment that encourages you to reach for excellence. I look forward to our journey together!
