Hard Times by Charles Dickens

Women are lawyers. Women are doctors. Women are engineers. In today’s society, women have endless opportunities to have any career or schooling of their choosing. For example, Jasmine Twitty defied all odds and became the first youngest african-american judge in the South Carolina municipal court. Hillary Clinton was the first woman to run for presidency in 2008. Oprah has had a chance to win many awards, all of which women were not expected to achieve.

In other centuries, women weren’t always eligible for these favorable circumstances. For women to go to school or do anything other than be the typical “housewife” was out of the norm. You know the typical stay at home with the kids kind of wife. The type of wife that would stay at home and nurture the children when they are sick. Awake the children up in the morning, get them dressed, fed, and ready for school all while making lunches for everyone including the husband. The wife that irons all the clothes, washes the dishes, vacuums the floor, prepares breakfast, and keeps track of when the children have practice. The wife who schedules doctors appointments and makes sure the children don't miss them. By classifying women in this certain type of role is demeaning. Why do the women have to stay at home? Why are they considered as nothing less or nothing more than a housewife? In present day society we have gotten rid of the norms in earlier centuries.
