Memoirs of a Geisha was a film released in 2005. Let’s take a look of the trailer.

Let me talk about the background of this film.

  • A 2005 American film adaptation of the novel of the same name.
  • The picture was directed by Rob Marshall and was released in the U.S
  • Production took place in southern and northern California and in several locations in Japan.

We found some stereotypes in this film. Geisha is traditional Japanese female entertainers. They perform various Japanese arts, such as classic music and dance.

In this film, some scene showed that geisha would have sex with their clients. It is definitely not. The women would have sex with their male customers. In Japanese we would call them Oiran.

Another stereotype is about the men in this film. Japanese man who wears a traditional kimono. He is a kimono maker that dress up and make kimono for geisha. And Japanese men who wear business suits are the clients of geisha. But they can only have normal services from junior geisha. Their jobs were deliverer, worker, etc.

But one of the main character --- Chairman. He is American Japanese. He was described as friendly, gentle, respectable among japanese, and sympathetic. He has business relationship with powerful American people. And he is honored guest.

And the two Colonel and Lieutenant, they are senior and powerful soldier of America. They are very honored guest and chairman also had to respect them. They are described as gentle, respectable among all people, powerful and successful.

Cultural Imperialism

In western’s eyes, Asians are inferior to the West and Asians can be oppressed. Let’s see this poster. This one is western one. And this one is Japanese one. In western they make the main character as white face and blue eyes. But the real Asian must be like this one.
