Manifest Destiny

During the territorial expansion of the USA, in the era between the end of the war of 1812 to the civil war, there was a term known as Manifest Destiny. All that stood in the settlers way was the land itself and natives. Currently there are millions and millions of Syrian refugees on the run, and in hiding. The US has been working to help admit a fraction of these refugees into a safe country. These two events being in different time periods, shows much similarity seeing that foreigners are migrating to a new land. Throughout the 19th century, Americans believed that it was their god given right to expand out West, this era can directly compare and contrast with the current issue with refugees from the war zone of Syria being admitted into the USA.

Syria’s civil war has broken out and has created one of the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st century. Some 11 million people are currently on the run in Syria, more importantly, 13.5 million people in need of welfare assistance. For the US to meet their goal Barack Obama must admit at least 10,000 refugees each year. 70% of these admitted refugees are women and children; as settlers expanded west most children did not survive, and women were a necessity. In this warzone, these refugees have nowhere to go and are in need of a safe place to live and a hope for a better life. Similar to settlers of the colonial period, the western land was a place of opportunity with its rich soil and raw minerals, although the trip took a hardened settler there was hope of living a better life.
