Propaganda Vs Advertising

The definition of propaganda is information especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. Propaganda has a very negative connotation to it. It is used or was used commonly during war to promote one side by using false or exaggerated statements against the other.While some may believe that advertising is similar, it is obvious and clear to see they are not and here’s why.

Advertising is the act of promoting commercial goods and services. According to the article, “Difference between propaganda and advertising”, the author states, “...because while advertising is all about presenting things which exist and just need to be made accessible to consumers, propaganda is making something which may not even exist for the sole reason of selling an ideology.” In other words, the author believes that propaganda is making something up just to gain support or using something factual and switching up the ideology for one side. The most important message is that advertising presents things and thoughts that does exist without making up false claims about their opponents. I agree with the claim because of how propaganda uses things in a more negative light than advertising does.

Propaganda, especially during war, was used to exaggerate the events happening during the time. According to Human Security Center, “War propaganda is often labelled as ‘news’ manipulated to further separate agendas. This was certainly true in Rwanda where government propagandas claimed invading RPF intended to massacre the hutu population.” Basically, the quote is saying that propaganda used during war would make false claims about the opposing side just to separate and stir problems.
