LESSON PLAN

A. Students and Setting

Students: Students at intermediate level, who can use English to communicate

Setting: A class of 10 university students with 1 class per week, 4 periods per class (60 minute each)

B. Lesson background

Previous lesson: Students watched a video clip about recycling buiding materials and leant how to use abbreviations in notes.

Students are going to listen to an audio about ‘Salvaged building material’.

C. Aims and Objectives

Aims: Practice listening and speaking skills, improve communicative effiency.

Objectives: After listening, students will be able to:

Understand the main ideas of the lesson

Identify signal phrases and use them to create a short speech.

Give a presentation in front of the group

D. Materials and Sources

Materials: Inside Listening and Speaking 3 Hamilton, Karen & Lawson, Lawrence (2016), Oxford, University Press. with audio file, text book projector, speakers, laptop, hand- out.

Do vocabulary activities

Hand-out 1 (pair-work)

Give some ideas about the topic:

Ask Ss some questions:

1. Would you ever like to build your own house? Why? Why not?

2. What materials (wood, bricks, etc) are building on your campus house made from?

3. Have you ever made something new out of old material?

Separate the class into 3 groups

Let the Ss listen to the audio 1st time to get the general ideas

Let Ss listen to the audio 2nd time and do the True- False lesson in handout 2 (pair work)

Give a brief definition about Signal phrases

Show Ss a list of Signal phrases and ask Ss do the tast on the text book

Play the lecture again to let Ss add more Signal phrases in the lecture to their list

Let Ss discuss with their friend to organize the signals they heard into categories

Ask Ss to use what they learnt from the lecture to prepare for their own speech in 10 minutes

Go around the class to observe Ss working, give prompts

Let Ss give their presentation, taking notes and give them comments

Summerize the lesson and give Ss homework

 

Get the meaning of ‘savaged material’

Prepare to listen to an audio about ‘Savaged materials’

Get the meanings of vocabulary to understand the content of the presentation in the audio.

Discuss in group 3 given question. Send representative to express the group idea

Listen to the audio carefully

Do the exercise and check the answer with their friends

Think about signal phases they may use in their speech and add to the list

Ss add more Signal phrases in the lecture to their list

Discuss in group to complete the group presentaion base on the signal phrases

Discuss and complete the presentation

Listen to T comments to improve their speaking skills
