Election of 1976

-democratic primary: Feb. 1976; at the beginning of the New Hampshire campaign, many American’s didn’t recognize the name Jimmy Carter, the former governor of Georgia. "Jimmy who?" they asked, but at the time of the convention, Jimmy Carter easily won the democratic nomination.

-Barbara Jordan: delivered a speech at the New Hampshire convention ^ ^ ^ . A representative for Texas, she was the first woman and African American to "address a national convention". Born in Houston, Texas in 1936. Graduated from Texas Southern University and earned a law degree from Boston University in 1959. Elected to the Texas state legislature in 1966- becoming the first African American in the state senate since the reconstruction. "Governor for a Day" in 1972.

Carter

- 1946 graduated from United States Naval Academy as an engineering officer on nuclear subs. 1962-entered politics. Peanut farmer. Governor of Georgia in 1970. A VERY religious Baptist. His appointed staff include: 12% were women, 12% were African Americans, 4% were Hispanic, out of 1,200 full-time appointees. "down home" approach; wore cardigan sweaters on TV, instead of a business suit.

-Foreign Policy: to bring peace to foreign nations. Camp David served as a meeting place of leaders to make peace terms and agreements. Camp David is a rustic presidential retreat in the Maryland hills. Carter served as peace maker in a conference between him, Anwar el-Sadat from Egypt, and Israel’s prime minister Menachem Begin. Camp David Accords: the framework for peace agreed at Camp David between the three.

Panama Canal: Carter gave the Panama Canal back to Panama (Roosevelt gained control of land rights in the 1900’s) in 1977. This caused bitter debate in congress. Panama would receive the canal in 2000, stated in the treaty, it also gave the U.S. the right to take military action to keep it open.

-Recognition of China: 1979-Carter establishes relations with the People’s Republic of China. China wanted American technology and expertise in modernizing their country. Being close with China would make for easier ties with the Soviet Union. Good trade business with China, nearly one billion people.

-Africa: Carter names Andrew Young as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, he played a large role in policies toward Africa. "Carter called for rule by the black majority in South Africa and in Rhodesia." -Cuba and the Soviet Union should stop interfering in African nations. During a visit to Liberia and Nigeria in 1978, Carter was cheered in the streets.

-SALT II: (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) limited nuclear warheads and missiles each power could have. Agreement treaty signed by Carter and the Soviet Union’s Leonid Brezhne v. Carter felt it would fail, and didn’t send it to senate.

-Afghanistan: Carter threatened Soviet leader to pull back his troops from Afghanistan for it would ruin the ties between them severely. He imposed a boycott on the Olympics in 1980 held in Moscow.

-Iran Hostage Crisis: in 1979, a revolution led by Muslim fundamentalists, developed in Iran. They wanted it to go back to the old days and have a better economy. Their old leader, Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, a political friend
