Discuss similarities between the mentoring relationships, Good Will Hunting and “Thank You M’am”
Mentorships are an effective way to develop positive characteristics in the people who need it most. In order to build a strong mentoring relationship, trust is essential. Without trust, it is almost impossible to get closer. The relationships between Will and Sean, in the movie Good Will Hunting directed by Gus Van Sant and Roger and Luella, in the short story “Thank you M’am” written by Langston Hughes is the example of the successful mentoring relationship. Both adults build trustworthy mentoring relationships with the young people in order to teach them a way to solve their own problems.
The relationships between both characters are based on trust. In the movie, as a counsellor, Sean decides to build trust first. Instead of asking Will about his life, Sean reveals his story to Will. By telling Sean’s personal stories, Will slowly starts to show interests and eventually he becomes comfortable enough to tell his own story. To get other peoples’ trust, people need to speak about their personal stories first. In the story, Luella creates a situation that shows she trusts him. After arriving at her house, she “leaves her pocket bag on the desk” (Hughes 2). Although Roger tries to steal it a while ago, she puts it closer to him than to her. In addition, she goes behind the screen where she can’t see her purse nor Roger. Normally, people will keep an eye on their valuables because they don’t trust others. However, Luella doesn’t even tries to hide it which demonstrates she believes
