Just Lather Thats All - a Short Story

We know that The Barber and Captain Torres are on opposite sides of the civil war, but they both share the same traits and are quite similar. Both characters state in the book that they don’t like to kill nor do they enjoy it in any way. It seems that the captain and the Barber Both take pride in their jobs regardless of the work they have to perform. In the end of the book it seems that both characters walk away unharmed.

In the short story “Just Lather, That’s all” Both characters state they don’t like killing, the only difference is that Captain Torres kills for a living and the Barber had a thought of killing for a little while. Captain Torres stated in the story that he enjoyed hunting the Rebels but doesn’t enjoy killing. In the story the barber was having thoughts about killing the Captain because of hate. He is sceptical about doing so and is called a coward for not killing Mr. Torres.

In the short story written by Hernando Téllez, we can see that both characters seem to take pride in their jobs. There is two instances in the short story where we can see the barber taking pride in his work. The barber stated “ I was also a conscientious barber, and proud of the preciseness of my profession.” and also “A good barber such as I prides himself on never allowing this to happen to a client.” Captain Torres can also be seen taking pride in his work as we can see him over explaining scenarios to the Barber, thus making the Captain sound like he is bragging.
