Harvey, Sir Paul, ed. The Oxford Companion to English Literature. Oxford at Clarendon Press, 1967. Herman Melville was born in 1819 in New York. When Melville’s father passed away, he became a school master, and after that he was shipped off as a cabin boy. Howard, Leon. American Writers Volume 3. Charles Scribner’s Sons. 1974. Melville wrote about reality and became a storyteller instead of just a writer. Until recently, the actual events of his life were still unknown to the readers of his work. At the age of thirty-seven, he seemed all washed up. Kimbel, Bobby Ellen, ed. Dictionary of Literary Biography, Volume 74. American Short Story Writers. Pennsylvania State University, 1988. Before 1880, in both Melville’s writing and life. There were many convenient similarities. With in three years, 1853- 1856, he wrote sixteen stories and published fourteen. They were published in the Harper’s New Monthly Magazine.
