Compare and Contrast the leadership styles of Nooyi, McChrystal and yourself. What is similar? What is different? Which would you like to be your leader, and why?
McChrystal spent four decades in the US Army leading men and women of all ages and backgrounds daily. When I think of military leadership its always what I see from movies that stereotypical image of some guy barking orders. I learned there is so much more to it than that and just as in the business field he has had to use the same tactics we are learning about. McChrystal leads by understanding the culture of the organization and empathizes with the members while understanding what makes the organization operate. His team was widespread and included people from all backgrounds that he had to bind together for a shared purpose. Which is what some companies do when they include everyone in the decision-making process for the company. He stated in his speech how he even had to be reverse mentored dealing with technology and not just for communication but for encouragement. McChrystal is a leader who knows the need in having to adapt when being a leader.
Nooyi has been at Pepsi for 17 years and is respected because she believes in building relationships with her people and hearing people out even if she doesn’t agree. She is not afraid to lead under a collaborative effort to run the company and the people under her efficiently. Nooyi even has three ex-CEOs of PepsiCo as her informal advisors. She is a fair levelheaded leader who doesn’t just think about herself succeeding but her whole company. She charges people to bring their values to the company because she most certainly brings hers. Nooyi even cares about the affect her company has on the consumers and the high effects sugar has on diabetes in this country. She leads with empathy and understanding.
