Diversity Paper

The diversity of any organization can affect the way people operate within a business. Some ways that a company would be affected by diversity are the ethnicity of a group, the difference in gender aspects, the age of employees working in the company and the socioeconomics that affect the employees working in the company. All of these have an impact of the company in the areas that the employees work in and how they react to one another.

Ethnicity:

What is Ethnicity? Ethnicity is a group of people differentiated from the rest of the community by racial origins or cultural background. (Oxford Dictionary, 1989).

In every organization, ethnicity is very common. Every organization has different groups of people working for them especially if the organization is a large company that provides services around the world. Ethnicity can divide into different groups with different cultural background. For example, Hispanics can be considered one race, but the Hispanics have different cultural backgrounds. The Hispanics or the Latinos can be in the same group but different background. There are people from the South America, Central America and North America. Every part of America has their beliefs and values when it comes to their background and their race. All organizations should not discriminate any employee because of the ethnic group. If they do, the organization will be subject to a law-suit.

Gender:

Gender can be classified as a male or female. Every employee should not be discriminated because of their gender. In all organizations, men as women can perform the same job duties if the organization allows them. Men and Women can have the same education and they can apply for the same position if they decide. Most of the organizations do interviews between men and women to see who will be the best candidate that meet the requirements for that specific position. With these interviews, the organization is covered against discrimination. Gender should not be a problem for an organization since both female and male are required to perform certain types of jobs and both men and women can get the work out no matter what the duties are. These jobs can include hard labor which most of the women cannot work at because they do not have the same strength as men do but they can have other duties that women can do that can also be part of a man responsibility. On the other hand, men can also do a women’s job. One of the jobs that men used to stereotype was nursing. Men used to think that nursing was only for women but now days there are more men going into the nursing field. Now that we are in the twenty first century, all organizations should not have a problem with gender.

Age:

The employees of today have changed a great deal from the past. Now days you are seeing the older generation more in the work force, along with the younger generations. There are some potential issues that can arise in the different age groups; these can be communication, maturity, and perception. These can all have negative and positive impacts on the company.

One is that there is a different communication barrier that can come up when the different age groups communicate with one another. Example of this is when someone in his or her fifties or sixties says to one of the younger subordinates that they need to be more professionally dressed. The younger generation has a different view point on how they view professional dressing then say some one that is older.

Maturity can also be something that is different between the different generations in the work place.
