There are several functions of pubic relations (PR). Public relations surrounds us each day whether we are aware of it or not. The purpose of this paper is to explain the organizational and societal functions of public relations. Of the list provided two functions will be chosen that are considered to be organizational and societal functions of public relations. An explanation will be provided as to why the selected choices were categorized as organizational or as societal. Similarities and differences that exist between the organizational and societal functions will be provided.

Organizational functions of PR entail activities that are related to an organization. Public relations is not only promoting a positive image to the public. Public relations also involves promoting a positive image within the organization. One of the main functions of organizational public relations is to change the mind of a specific audience and promote goodwill of the organization. Organization PR involves understanding the concerns and attitudes of its publics. Organization publics consist of the community, employees within the organization and its customers. Once an organization understands it publics, that organization must be develop and maintain a working relationship.

Whereas organizational functions of PR is more related to an organization, societal PR seems to more related to the public. Societal functions of public relations is related more toward establishing and maintaining an effective relationship with the general public. Societal public relations goals are to promote a positive image to its public. In trying to promote a positive image, societal PR also focuses on presenting an image of being trustworthy to society. This particular function of PR dwells on being credible and having accountability.

Organizational functions can be considered a main function of PR as other functions fall under organizational functions. Media relations, employee relations, community relations, consumer affairs and government affairs are some functions that are considered to be organizational functions. For the purpose of this paper communications management and employee relations will be discussed.

“Communications management is the systematic implementing, planning, monitoring, and revision of the channels of communication within an organization and between organizations” (Communications Management, 2007). Communications management has been categorized as organizational due to the fact this is communication that is prepared within the organization. This information should be concise and clear so that employees and other involved audiences receive the same interpretation of the communication. If an organization does not communicate with its employees or other involved publics, they will begin to assume, which will not be an asset to an organization.

Employee relations can be categorized as an organization function. “Employee relations covers communication, employee participation in management decisions, conflict and grievance resolution, trade unions and collective bargaining” (Employee Relations). Employee relations has been categorized as organizational because it involves the relationship between an organization and its employees. Employee relations is in place to promote a safe and effective working environment. Employee relations also focuses on developing and maintaining commitment, along with motivation of each employee.
