Prose Essay

All across the world, students everywhere are given books to read during the summer. These books aren’t all the same and not everyone has an interest in them, but everyone is required to read them. In states like California, there are some schools such as Oceana High school, that doesn’t give their students an option to choose what book they want to read but rather gives the students one book to read however, this isn’t the case for every school. In New York, at Bloomfield High students are given a wide variety of books to choose from which allows a student to actually enjoy the book they are reading rather than, to have no choice but to read a book they do not like.

In Eighth grade, I read the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” which Prose discussed in her article “I Know Why the Caged Bird Cannot Read”. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a very common summer reading book for kids in middle school and high school because of the morals taught throughout the book. Although this book teaches the students valuable lessons, parents may question whether the teachers go into depth on why this book is so important to our generation. However this isn’t the only issue, novels like “To Kill a Mockingbird” are not up to standards with the literature we should focus on, therefor schools should make a change to the books we read.
