Introduction:

Good leaders need to have all the following traits; vision, courage, integrity, honesty, humility and focus. An example of a good leader who shows the following traits is Olivia Lum, CEO and Founder of Hyflux Pte Ltd.

Joining Glaxo as a chemist in 1986, Ms Olivia saw the potential for water recycling business. She started her own company called Hydrochem (S) Pte Ltd in 1989 to deal in waste-water treatment products and systems.

Ms Olivia sold her house and car to raise the start-up capital for the waste-water treatment business, determined to find success. She faced many challenges and through her determination and grit she overcame these challenges and succeeded. During the early days, she had to go to every factory personallyin Malaysia and Singapore to sell the water treating products and systems.

She changed the name to HyfluxPte Ltd in 2000 and soon after in 2001 Hyflux was listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange.

Hyflux was awarded 3 big projects by PUB:

  • Project 1: The municipal water treatment plant, Bedok NEWater plant
  • Following the success, Hyflux secured the 2nd project, NEWater plain in Seletar
  • The 3rd project awarded to Hyflux was the Chestnut Avenue Waterworks – using membrane based filtration

Achievements

As a leader, she has obtained many prestigious awards:

  • In 2002,adding to her success, she was nominated as a Member of Parliament

  • In 2003,she obtained the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur (EY) of the year award
  • In 2004,she was awardedBusinessperson of the year by the Singapore Business Awards
  • In 2005,she won Executive of the year for Singapore.
  • In 2011,she was awarded the prestigious EY World Entrepreneur of the year 2011

VISION

Ms Olivia has always believed in communicating her dreams to her employees and strongly influencing them positively towards work. She has always moved to motivate her staff to achieve their best and has asserted to them on how important they are to her and her company.

INNOVATIVE

She is an innovative leader bringing the company from a small 3-man company to what it is today. She has always maintained a very high standard from herself and her employees in every aspect of the business.

HONESTY & INTEGRITY

Managing her staff well is an important aspect to being a leader and Ms Olivia has done that with tremendous success. She has never been afraid and in fact always hired people who are better than her so as to add value to the company.

Integrity is also very important to her and her employees as they know and understand that they are the brand’s and Singapore’s ambassadors.
