It Was Daniel Goleman Who First Introduced Emotional Intelligence
Daniel Goleman first introduced Emotional Intelligence, and applied these concepts to businesses. In his research at large global companies, Goleman found that while the qualities traditionally associated with leadership, such as; intelligence, toughness, determination, and vision are required for success, they are considered insufficient. Therefore, Goleman believed effective leaders are also distinguished by a high degree of emotional intelligence, that includes self awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill. While these qualities may seem un-business like, Goleman found direct ties between emotional intelligence and measurable business results. Similarly, possessing emotional intelligence can be an advantage for, professional athletes, Doctors, Principals of public schools, and Parents raising their families. The author of this paper spent ten years as a professional athlete. During those years, she was passionate and driven to achieve beyond her own and everyone else’s expectations. This athlete was extremely motivated to represent her country at the Olympics. She developed motivational phrases to say to herself while racing, and became mentally and physically stronger. Additionally, her Self-awareness, the first component of emotional intelligence was also extremely beneficial. Self awareness is defined by Daniel Goleman as, “having a deep understanding of one’s emotions, strengths, weaknesses, needs, and drives”. Having an innate awareness of, teammates, coaches and opposing competition allowed the athlete to successfully represent her country in many international, national and local races. Goleman believes that everyone has the potential to learn these competencies, however it is up to the individual because emotional competencies are learned abilities not taught.
