The article chosen for this paper is “MySpace Signs Deal to Aim Its qContent for Overseas TV”, which was written by Brain Stelter and was published on the New York Times website. The article focuses on the fact that MySpace has signed a contract with a British production company, known as SineReveille International. SineReveille is the distributing portion of the Shine Group’ and has rights to international shows including “The Biggest Loser” and “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” The contract with MySpace was to allow MySpace to share its video content overseas.
MySpace is one of the many branches of a bigger company known as News Corporation; which in the article is known as “’Hollywood’s digital playground.’” With this in mind Shine Group is hopping to bring the shows from online to television. This is an extreme risk for Shine Group considering that most of the movies online are five minutes or less in length, and lacks the expensive production company’s special touches. But, according to Ms. Mahon, the president o Shine Group, says, “There are plenty of sitcoms that have emerged out of one sketch on a show.”
With this in mind Shine Group expresses that MySpace plans on doing something different then the previous internet shows that were produced. Shine Group plans with collaboration from MySpace plans on “localize shows for international markets and adapt specific concepts of the shows for television.” Furthermore MySpace is using its internet following as a connection to its viewers; MySpace is using the feed back from its members to know whether or not to produce certain shows. MySpace has focused on shows such as “Roommates” and, “Special Delivery,” as some of the first; while still having more shows in production just here in the U.S.. In Spain MySpace is working with Universal Music on a show called “Porta”, which is a show baesd on a hip-hop star. In the United Kingdom MySpace also intends to produce a show called “ I Love Chieftown” which is also another music based show. All of these shows are to be produced later this year, which seems to be a benefit for Shine Group.
