I want to talk about HOTTOYS, a Hong Kong-based company for designing, developing, and manufacturing highly detailed 1/6 scale collectible action figures (toys of film characters) to worldwide markets.

Risk Assessment:

1. Product risk assessment: HOTTOYS faces the risk that the design and the manufacture of the product have potential defects which is hard to discover.

2. Operational risk assessment: HOTTOYS faces the risk that assembly-line workers lacks of training that cannot make each product exactly the same.

3. Strategic risk assessment: HOTTOYS faces the risk that making figures with unpopular themes which would decrease of sale of figures.

KPI:

1. Measure defects by making few prototype first and test them before mass production which make sure figures do not have any design defects.

2. Measure customer feedback about particular figure to assess the performance of assembly-line workers.

3. Monitor the data of the box office of films and which character fans want the most.

Megatrends

I choose #5 "Technological Breakthroughs". Currently, HOTTOYS let engravers grave and paint the head sculpt which is the soul of the figure. Nowadays, the 3D-Printing technology allows people to use the scanning data to make the model, which is more precise than engravers grave the head sculpt by comparing with pictures. It might offer other companies a chance to make high quality head sculpts comparing with HOTTOYS. However, the cost of 3D-Printing is really high and the technology is not mature at all. In the future, HOTTOYS could use 3D-printing make the head sculpt and let engravers add more details on it and use the high level painting skills make the better head sculpt.
