The economic trend that has the greatest affect on the janitorial industry is unions. The social trend that most affects SBM is the current health trend. This is very important for SBM to focus on, because companies are looking to help create healthy work environments. Environmental factors are key and at the forefront of the janitorial industry. Recycling and “going green” is a trend that has affected many companies and most industries. The janitorial industry financial projections are important to SBM; the forecasted revenue for the janitorial industry in 2008 is 40,382,000,000 (IBISWorld, 2008). However, the janitorial industry is expected to have revenues of 42,758,000,000 in 2010 (IBISWorld, 2008). SBM is focused on its employees, its customers, and its global expansion. Introduction
Organizations complete an environmental analysis to identify opportunities and threats in their markets. However, a company must also examine the internal environment for opportunities that affect the organization. Upon successful completion of an environmental analysis, a company can focus on the opportunities and threats identified and determine what course of action will enable the organization to grow and prosper.
A company’s external environment includes the remote, the specific industry, and the operating environments. A firm should design strategies that will optimize its environmental opportunities when it assesses the different environments (Pearce, et al, 2004). The internal environment encompasses factors that are within the boundaries of its own organization. These factors are employees, morale, relationship management, motivation, and the policies that are in effect. In today’s rapidly evolving business arena, it remains imperative for an organization to identify and analyze the different internal and external forces that influence its business to create and maintain a competitive advantage. In this paper, the environments within SBM are identified and their influence on the organization reaching its long-term goals is discussed.
