1. Introduction

The main purpose of this report is to analysis the key change issues coming from Galley Cafeteria and to suggest them with some recommendations.

First part of the report will demonstrate the impact of internal and external factor on Galley Café by using SWOT analysis. Using SWOT analysis it can be helpful for Galley Café, itwill tell us where it stand currently. Second part of the report will address the change undergone by Galley Café, which is the planned and emergent changed. Further it will also analysis whether Galley Café is going through incremental or transformational change. Third part of the report will illustrate the reaction of the employees by using coping cycle and the reason for being resistance to change. Forth part of the report will address two sets of recommendation by Kirkpatrick three Keys to Successful and John Kotter 8 steps to change.

This report will show what are the ways to improved the company revenue and effectiveness let begin with SWOT analysis.

2. A SWOT analysis “is an analytical tools which is used in the business to assist in assessing a business in relation to other competitive business. It is a quick way to look at the current environment as well as what the future may hold.” (Hall, 2003, pg-92). SWOT stands for Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats.

Strength :

Location: The Galley Café is located on the top of an eight storey office block. The view from the top will be useful and, it can use as a selling point to attract customer for this unique bird eyes view.

Brand name and experienced staff : The Galley Cafe was sold to a commercial catering company called Lunchbox UK Ltd. The benefits of having Lunchbox will be their experienced staff and Lunchbox UK Ltd is a well know organization which can be benefit to them. The area is going through a rapid change it can give customer a fresh and new place to explore.

Weakness :

Lack of Leadership: Jean Porter was not able to motivate the employees with her new rules and regulations. Rather, Jean Porter is using force field to orders the employee to work with the new changes. Employees will feel discontented and it will lead to a problem of having higher absentee and it will affect the team work between them.

Outdated Resources and Menu: The Galley Café has start it operation since 1980s , so there is high chances of outdated decoration, resources and no proper training and development given to the employees. Hence, the employees is having a hard time to cope with the changes.

Resistance to Change: Employees did not want to accept the changes when Jean Porter introduced the wider range of dishes, as she was ten years younger than them which created age gap between them. Another issue that was she did not take their current culture into consideration whereby she abolished the half an hour morning smoking break and did not replaced two others employees which have left the company and that makes the employees feel very frustrated without any further explanation to the changes.

Opportunity:

Development around the area: There is an opportunity for Galley Café as the café is just two miles away from the major city centre and building around the area is going through a rapid change, there is an opportunity of increasing market condition but under a proper strategies and advertisement would help to promote Galley Café business.

Tie Up with the Cinema: Galley Café can take contracts from the Cinema, when customer purchase a pair of movie tickets in return customer will received a discount coupon. With this it can help to promote Galley Café and attract customer from the other shopping mall.

Threat :

Competition: The biggest challenge that faced by Galley Café would be the new openings of three new chain restaurants and two pubs.

Trade Union: With Trade Union involvement will create issue amount the organization. As trade union has the legal powers to shut off the company if the employees are not happy.

3. Nature of Change undergone by the organization :

Determinism or Voluntarism: There are two assumptions about human nature underpin approaches to managing strategic change which is the Determinism and Voluntarism. For Determinism manager are powerless where else in Voluntarism approach managers are the decision maker (Hayes, 2010, p.72). In Galley Café the power of the manager is limited as Lunch Box UK instructed Jean to reduce the total wage bill by five percent.
