Observable organizational polices are evident in the staffing process at Ortho Clinical Diagnostics. By partnering with management the Human Resources Department determines the appropriate number and types of people required in a functional area. Internal and external people can observe and take part in the hiring process.
Internal recruiting exists which enables eligible employees to post for jobs through the company Intranet. Interested candidates may apply for a given position within the organization by going through the bidding process.
External recruiting is another viable option for hiring personnel. Job postings may appear on the Internet, in the newspaper, or through employee referrals. This option provides a means for attracting innovative and diverse individuals to an organization.
Organizational Diversity
Diversity in the organization is highly observed and employees are required to understand and participate in diversity programs. Internal associates and perspective employees alike can observe the many facets of diversity in Ortho Clinical Diagnostics through the website. People are considered assets to the organization and are highly valued (Johnson & Johnson, 2008).
Affinity groups provide an excellent means for exchanging ideas and encouraging employee development. Affinity groups include the African American Leadership Council, Community of Asian Associates, Gay and Lesbian Organization for Business and Leadership, Hispanic Organization for Business and Leadership, Help our Neighbors with Our Resources, South Asian Professional Network and Association, and the Women’s Leadership Initiative (Johnson & Johnson, 2008). Technology Impact on Culture
Ortho Clinical Diagnostics has recently restructured the Information Technology Department. The reorganization allows the integration of information technology services at a global level. Consequently, each operating company is structured to leverage services provided at the corporate level. This has minimized unnecessary expenditures and resources, and maximized standardization of systems across the enterprise. For example, each operating company is responsible for training employees and maintaining individual training records. Training records may be requested during an FDA audit and must be produced to show that employees are qualified and trained to perform given assignments. In the past, multiple systems were in place because many individual operating companies individual processes in place. Today, one system is in place for the Johnson and Johnson family of companies.
The new structure has maximized efficiency and observable aspects are evident. By partnering with the global services group, Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics can work on more projects at a given time, which has a positive impact on the bottom line. For example, while working with resources provided at the corporate level, more projects can move through the pipeline and this has led to significant monetary gains. In the past, when Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics could rely only on internal resources, one project had to reach completion prior to the commencement of another project.
Ethical Standards and Behavior
At Ortho Clinical Diagnostics a code of ethics ensures people understand company expectations. The code of ethics is to identify the responsibility employees have with regard to hospitals, doctors and nurses, patients, and families (Johnson & Johnson, 2008). In addition, the code of ethics states that each employee of the organization is valued and treated with respect; likewise; individuals must treat each other respectfully. These ethics are readily observed upon entry into the buildings. A framed poster in the reception area displays the ethics and a smaller version of the poster is featured in each of the conference rooms.
Communication Practices
There are many methods of communications at Ortho Clinical Diagnostics. Plasma screens are placed at the entrances of each of our buildings, so internal and external people are able to observe company events, new technologies, and general information upon entry. Another very prominent method of communication is through the use of a tool Corporate Communications developed. Completing and returning a request form to the communications group can disseminate information to each individual in the operating company throughout our worldwide locations via email.
