Article Review That Demonstrates the Lenses of Pathos, Logos, and Ethos
"Animal Cruelty and Domestic Violence" - The Animal Legal Defense
Ethos: " Experts agree that statistics about abuse, while disturbing, probably downplay the true magnitude of domestic violence." Bringing in statics can help your credibility in an article, showing that the information has been proven and tested, which makes this quote demonstrate the ethos it brings to the paper. Also, "To fight the silence that hides domestic violence, the 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) helped establish the National Domestic Violence Hotline and exponentially increased the reporting of domestic violence." demonstrates that this problem was real and acts were passed to help the issue, bringing more credibility to the writer and the article by obviously stating what a true issue it was, to even involve the government.
Logos: "Abuse is not a problem with anger management, but rather a way to establish and maintain control over victims." most people know that violence is a way to gain authority, it has been proven throughout history time and time again, so it's pretty logical to figure that abuse in the form of domestic or animal can be about having power over the victims. Which is why I chose this quote as one of the demonstrations of logos in the article. Another is "The truth is that a person who harms animals will likely harm humans–and a person who harms humans will almost certainly harm animals." and "Animal cruelty investigations frequently unravel chronic domestic abuse" these two I find are similar, but both portray logic. If you think about it, someone who wants to establish power by violence and terror, would not just stop at harming humans alone, or animals alone. Someone who is willing to abuse one, will be willing to abuse the other. That's why is it commonly known that animal abuse cases will often lead to domestic violence cases as well.
Pathos: "When a child harms animals it can indicate that serious abuse has been inflicted on the child; consequently, animals are abused in nearly all households in which children have been abused." This is a very sad statement, domestic violence is a deeply rooted pain, especially when it's inflicted upon a child, because then the child grows with this type of behavior and learns it. Which often means that the children will carry on the trait when they grow up, or even as they are still young. This is why you cant always blame children for their actions, it may be the only things they've been taught. "Victims often admit an animal is being abused before they admit their own suffering." In
