We all knew that one kid who was always getting picked on in our childhood years. Some of us know several of those kids who were in that same situation. We also know the “Bully”. Bullies are normally not liked by everyone. In every school classroom there is at least one bully. There are bullies no matter where we may go. Whether it is school, work, or even play, it is almost guaranteed someone will be the bully and another person or group of people will be the bullied. It is most likely to occur in Middle school and high school. More high school students have reported being bullied than junior high school students. Many programs have been started to prevent bullying at schools with promotional speakers. Bullying consists of two types which are verbal and physical. Bullying can occur in any setting where human beings interact with each other. This includes school, religious community, the workplace, home and neighborhoods. It is even a common push factor in migration. Bullying can exist between social groups, social classes and even between countries.
In mostly every school, bullying is taken very seriously. Bullying behavior is an act of repeated aggressive behavior in order to intentionally hurt another person, physically or mentally. Bullying is characterized by an individual behaving in a certain way to gain power over another person. Behaviors may include name calling, verbal or written abuse, exclusion from activities, exclusion from social situations, physical abuse, or coercion. Bullies may behave this way to be perceived as popular or tough or to get attention. They may bully out of jealousy or be acting out because they themselves are bullied. According to USA National Center for Education Statistics suggests that bullying can be broken into two categories: Direct bullying, and indirect bullying which is also known as social aggression.
