Delegation

There is one concept in the world of business that is sometimes hard to grasp from management. “This concept can be described as a process of working with and through other to get a task or project accomplished known as delegation”

(www.extension.iastate.edu). “Derived from the Latin, delegate means to “send from”. In delegating you are sending the work from you to someone else”(www.liraz.com, 2005). Managers must take a most effective approach when delegating certain duties.

In a police department there is a great amount of delegation. There are also chains of command implemented in terms of delegation. In the various situations delegation has taken preference over being the one delegated. When management plans there must be effective strategies considered. At Prairie View A & M University Department of Public Safety the management concept is more into a military setting with Sergeants and Corporals. The highest person in delegation is the Chief of Police. Delegating is a major portion of his management responsibility. Therefore, this person has to deliver a clear and concise understanding of what is expected. This is directly tied into effective planning by management in delegation.

Organizing has proven to be an ongoing problem at Prairie View A&M DPS. It can be proven that it comes from poor delegation in most cases. The management could take a more effective approach on effectively delegating the duties of the officers. Many of the problems the officers face could be alleviated by use of effective delegation when organizing events, parking, citations being issued.

Controlling in management using delegation can become a tedious task especially

when those you are trying to delegate are sometimes working against you. Controlling the business can be understood as making sure the business flows successfully. The Sergeants are in charge of controlling patrol efforts. Whether it be writing a speeding citation or making an arrest. These efforts are to be controlled by the Sergeants on duty at the time. Taking control of the responsibility delegated by the Chief is what is being illustrated. “ Delegation is not giving an assignment; you are asking the person to accept responsibility for a project” (www.liraz.com, 2005). Management doing checks on progress can also control delegated situations. One cannot just expect one to understand everything asked of them.

Delegation in the aspect of leadership in management is a vital part of any management position at Prairie View A & M University DPS. If the delegation is anything other than effective when the leading management renders it; there could become a break in communication. This is one of the most impacted factors that could stand some professional training in at the DPS office.
