As we grow, the heroes we look up to change. Heroes take many forms. As children, our heroes ranged from comic book superheroes to imaginary friends. Now as young adults, our views got a little different and our heroes changed to those people that are more tangible. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a hero is a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities. To me a hero is a person that is brave in an extreme situation and acts despite the fact that bad things might befall them. Despite the different meanings all heroes have to possess certain qualities. They have got to be able to sacrifice for a greater good, be courageous, and be determined to achieve their goal.

According to Bob Dylan, “a hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom.” Looking throughout history, the people we have called heroes have all had to sacrifice one of their most valued possessions whether it be an object, person, or state of mind. Sacrifice is when someone gives up something they value for the sake of others. A great example of a hero that sacrificed for the greater good was Martin Luther King Jr. He lived in a place and time when speaking out against racism was dangerous and deadly. He fought on even after he was jailed and his house was set on fire. He was and truly is hero

Another quality heroes possess is courage. A quote that summarizes courage is one by Mark Twain, “courage is not the lack of fear. It is acting in spite of it.” I find this quote to be both inspirational and truly the definition of courage. In order to be a hero, you have to be able to face your fears and be willing to conquer them. For example, if you are scared of cats and you saw an old lady who needed helped getting into her house, which is full of cats, would you let her be or would you help her out?
