In the beginning third of my novel, Lakshmi’s Ama (mother) is expecting an addiction to the family. During these days, Nepal had a Monsoon. Because of this, her family experienced a traumatizing financial drop. After a month of suffering and starving most nights, the monsoon ended Ama decided to sell some of her jewelry to make a small amount of cash. Her stepfather goes out of town to visit his brother for a loan.
In the middle third of my novel, Lakshmi’s stepfather takes her to a woman named Baija Sita. She’s a well-known store owner. While he associated with her, they both made a deal to send Lakshmi away to “work” in the city for 500 rupees. Her aunt, Bilma, guided her to the urban city to meet the man that will take her to the Happiness House. When she finally arrives to her destination, she was beyond confused. Thinking she’ll work a couple months as a maid to pay off her parent’s debt, she finds out the catastrophic truth.
