English 3101 A

(1.) The Theme of the novel Lord Of The Flies,

There are many themes that could be used to describe the theme of this novel such as,

-People will abuse power if it is not earned.

-The fear of the unknown can be a powerful force, which can turn you to either insight or hysteria.

The main theme of this novel however is, “Society holds everyone together, and without these conditions, our ideas, values, and the basic of right and wrong are lost. Without society’s rigid rules, anarchy and savagery can come to light.”

I do very much agree with this theme. You see it everyday. When people are taken out of their “normal” settings and put somewhere that they are not used to with different rules and regulations they tend to act differently. Especially a group of children being taken from a life of living by rules given to them by teachers, parents etc. It would be normal for them to get excited and behave the way that they would.

This novel though, took the situation to the extremes and the children on the island acted savage, and took advantage of their situation with no proper rules to follow. Jack especially took advantage of the fact that he had been granted the power to be the Choir leader . He took this to make him the leader of the whole group giving him rights to “boss” the others around.

So yes, the theme of “Society Holds everyone together and without these conditions, our ideas, values and basic of right and wrong are lost.” Is an excellent theme for this novel.

(2.) The type of person who would abuse power in a way such as jack did. Would be someone who has been granted authority without having earned it rightfully, and is abusing the fact that he/she has people who will listen and follow them. These type of people are irresponsible to the fact that they can not handle having authority over something or someone. They abuse the power.

(3.) The symbol “Lord Of The Flies” represents Evil. It represents the great danger of the island and the evil that the boys had experienced being on the island. The Lord Of the Flies represents the Devil and it evilness.

(4.) Humans inflict suffering on fellow human beings because,

Some humans like to see other people suffer. Some humans take pride in making other humans miserable. It makes some people happy to see other people unhappy.

For example. In this novel Jack going after Ralph shows that Jack was unhappy with the fact that Ralph had decided to not join Jack’s savage tribe. Even though at the end he was the only one left who had not gone under Jack’s power he did not give in. I believe this is why Jack hated him so much. And why Jack wanted to hunt and kill him in the end.

The fact that Ralph was scared and alone made Jack happy. Knowing that he was making Ralph suffer made Jack happy.

(5.) The function of such negative work as in this novel shows that, in this case the Author William Golding had a very negative outlook on human nature and he showed that in this piece of writing.

William Golding wanted to show that given the unlimited power and no real rules and regulations. Humans can become evil savages who want to destroy other living things.

(6.) WHO IS THE MOST ----

--- Courageous Character?

The most Courageous character in this novel is Ralph. I believe this is so because Ralph was always the boy who was never really afraid or intimidated by Jack and his savages. Ralph always stuck to his own morals and did not become a savage like the other boys. Ralph always wanted things to be normal and have normal rules as they did when they were at home with elders and parents. Ralph was the most brave and courageous of all of the boys on the island.

--The most innocent Character on the island?

The most innocent Character on the island I believe was Simon.

Prior to Simon being killed. Simon was the boy who was always positive and always reassured Ralph when he had doubts of being rescued. Simon usually kept to himself and wandered off into the forest of the island on his own unless he was needed.

Simon never had any conflicts
