Montresor
Montresor if a very interesting character who devises the perfect plan to exact is revenge on a man that had insulted him and his family name for many years. Knowing very well that during the carnival Fortunato would be drinking even more than normal Montresor engages him with very urgent news. Montresor states that he has stumbled across a cask of amontillado and that he was on his way to have a wine enthusiast confirm that it is indeed amontillado. Knowing this would agitate Fortunato who thought of himself as the smartest man when it came to wine. This hooks Fortunato and he states “oh Luchesi can’t tell cheap wine from expensive wine, I’ll tell you if its real or not, come where is this cask?” Montresor takes Fortunato to his family’s catacombs and says that the wine cellar is at the bottom of the catacombs. On our way to the catacombs we really see Montresor play with fortunate and hint at his death and then even says oh we should get back your cough is getting worse. This may even show that Montresor may not want to go through with it and if Fortunato would give him one example that he isn’t the man Montresor wants to kill that maybe he will spare him. Unfortunately for Fortunato he was too cocky and prideful about knowing his wine and showing Montresor up that he missed key things that would have told him he was in danger. Things like the trowel being in Montresor’s hand and even the fact the for most of the story they are walking down into these catacombs, why would Montresor put a huge cask of wine at the bottom? How would he even get it down there? Montresor throws the torch at Fortunato before putting the last brick in place so that Fortunato can see the small bricked in area he was to die in.
