It’s Time the NCAA Answered the Wakeup Call

The text is an article written by Pete Fiutak covering the ins and outs off NCAA gambling. I decided to choose this article as a source because it covers the main topic of whether athletes should get paid along with all of the sub-questions the topic also brings forward.

The article first talks about a pool that was taken by 21,000 college athletes, asking them the question if they have ever gambled in some way. The pool showed that 35 percent of male athletes have and 10 percent of women athletes have. This is an awfully high number, considering that NCAA prohibits gambling. My favorite part of the article is when the author talks about the six facts as to why a college athlete would lead to gambling as a source of income. Each one of the author’s facts, I believe are legitimate reasons as to why student athletes would do wrong when it came to gambling or accepting money.

At the very end of the article, the author gives the reader his three claims to stop all of the problems. The first claim mentioned is allowing the athletes to hire an agent. The next is letting them accept whatever it is the booster’s wants to give them. And the third is cutting the athletes in on the TV profits. I would have to agree with all of them.

The author’s audience of this article is the general sports fan or the general sports fan who likes to gamble. It is a very broad audience since there are such a large number of people in this country who gamble.

The article is definitely claims of policy, but that is why I like it so much. Everything that the author is voicing in his writing, I agree with. Since the article is mostly persuasive, there isn’t much evidence. The only evidence that was in the text was the statistic about the number of athletes who have gambled.

The warrant of this article is the author showing the audience that there is a problem with NCAA gambling. So instead of avoiding the situation anymore, the author voices reasons to change the way things are. Especially, when games are being “fixed” and college
