People Shouldn't Believe the News on Tv
Mass media have become an important part of our everyday life. One can’t imagine a day without listening to the radio, surfing the Internet or watching TV, one of the most widespread media nowadays. Television remains the primary source of news for the majority of people. However, according to the statistics half of the statements made by TV news presenters are false. Thus there appears a reasonable question – whether people should believe the news on TV or they shouldn’t. To my mind TV-viewers shouldn’t trust the news presented on the TV screen.
First, I believe that television news is not news anymore. Instead of keeping the audience informed about really urgent and important matters they provide us only with celebrity gossip and off-sort stories. For instance, in 2016 most of American TV channels chose to give much coverage to the private life and rumors about the presidential candidates and they didn’t pay much attention to the relevant details of the their campaigns. What is more, the government has the power to correct and alter the subject of the news.
Second, we strongly doubt whether any of TV channels are free from political influence. The government always tries to control the information shared with the nation and doesn’t want people to know anything destroying their positive image. In Russia we have millions of examples when “state” and independent TV channels were presenting one and the same event absolutely different. No TV reports on the 26th of March said a word about big rallies against functional government, except the Internet media. People in the country have the right to know the true picture of the situation and the media shouldn’t let anybody manipulate or control their work. Sometimes in order to proof their world view they themselves make up facts and share fake news.
Third, there is a worldwide problem with news – making it fake. To catch viewer’s interest and thus to make more money people in the industry are not afraid of coloring up the truth or even making up a story based on rumors. The most blatant example of fake news hit Germany in 2016. According to the reports some Middle East refugees raped a 13-year-old girl of Russian origin. After the long investigation and medical examination the attack turned out to have been fabricated. However TV news and social media shared it widely, hundreds of people took to the streets to protest against innocent foreigners. Fake news may not only dishonor good people and hoodwink others but make them protest against a myth.
