A critique of “It takes family” by Rick Santorum
Dealing with the current issues of marriage and family people are being to determine their own views of what they consider a traditional or nuclear family to. In this critique “It Takes Family: Conservatism and the Common Good” Rick Santorum is a graduate of the university of Pittsburg, and was elected into US house of representatives of the Senate at the age of 32. He is known for is fight for social reform of welfare. He served on the Senate Agriculture, Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. Here describes his views as well full support of the traditional American family. This nuclear family consist of a husband, wife, and children all living in a loving and stable environment, being actively engaged in business, their community, their religion ,and other individuals. (Santorum, 89). Santorum argues that the families that function the best have a two- parent home and live in the better communities. Lastly, he stresses his points on how the media is corrupting the America society by allowing sex before marriage, easy divorces, and gay and legalized lesbian marriage.
Rick Santorum directly states that crime is goes along hand in hand with family structure. Using commonsense one can use their own experiences to know that this true, Santorum states, but here is proof. According to study of more than six thousand young men ages 14 to 22 who grew up without both parents ended up in jail, than boys who did. He also found another study that shown living in a broken home has a greater affect of bringing about more problems by 10-18% within the communities.
He stands that living in good community will bring about good behavior from the children, “Good communities are more able to benefit from the value of healthy families, and healthy families are more able to benefit from the value of good communities (88). For instance, boys living in the healthy communities are less likely to engage in brawls than boys who do not (89).
Not all negative effects reside in a single parent plenty of parents are raising children and they are doing just fine. However, the likihood depends the family and the community. If they are around positive behavior, the outcome will be positive. Nevertheless, it remains according to Dr. Wade, Horn a member of the Department of Health and Human Services, single parent home hold a higher risk than a two-parent home (89).
Father absence is not only a minority problem; it is a majority of families’ problem. In fact, there are more white children fathers missing than anyone. Santorum says many feel that not having a father around deals with abandonment but children are suffering emotionally as well. People assume that the families are happily divorced but it false. It is a cover up. It would be different if a family did not have any children, because the issue would not concern them. But in a married couple, a child has to suffer (89). Marriage is important because there are children involved. When people make decisions, they have to take into consideration the whole family not just themselves. One national study indicated by Santorum states that teenagers in single parent with a stepfather are 1.8 to 2.5 introduced to illegal drugs as are those living with their parents. There is no doubt that the best place for kids to be is with both their parents, so that they to may attain a successful future according to Santorum (90).
It is clear that Santorum is addressing single parent homes, low-income families and minorities but this is not the actual issue the government is According to Dr. Horn “When low income couples have a child out of wedlock and they are considering marriage, they are met with deafening silence from the social services delivery network.” “Instead of the social services system that supports and encourages them to pursue their choice of marriage, they are told that, rather
