Settling for Mediocrity

Settling for Mediocrity

As a child, my parents would tell me:

“You can be anything you want once you grow up!”

These days, I find that not to be true.

Reality has slapped me hard in the face-

No longer can I be the President, a rockstar, or an astronaut.

As a student, the education system tells me:

“You can succeed beyond what you can see; there’s a big bright beautiful world out there for those who are willing to work for it!”

These days, it is a lot easier said than done.

Everyone learns things in a different way, and they do not get that-

No longer can I be an all-A’s student, have a social life, and get a healthy amount of sleep.

As a person, society tells me:

“You cannot do that/wear that/be that/stand out!”

These days, I do not want to be just another face in the masses,

Unbeknownst to what is really out there, beyond the conformity.

You are frowned upon for even being the slightest bit different-

No longer can I become my own person, be an individual, or think for myself without being judged.

As a human, human nature tells me:

“You automatically have a longing to be accepted, to ‘fit in’ and not be lonely!”
