Spontaneous Short Story - Unwarranted
UNWARRANTED
It was one of the days that I had to stay up late to do homework until midnight. All of a sudden, I heard some noise from the outside of my room like someone just dropped a heavy box of books on the floor, but I didn’t know exactly where the sound came from. I went to the kitchen, living room, backyard; I even sneaked into my parents’ room, but there was nothing. I stood in the kitchen thinking that it might be my imagination after hours of studying. But again, I heard another bizarre sound. This time it was a continuous banging, so I followed it. It led me to a storage room which was usually as dark and quiet as a grave. The sound became louder when I got close to it, and I saw a little, faint light through the bottom of the door. It might be ridiculous to think that a thief was in there because that room was full of dust and old pieces of furniture that we had not given away, but I still grabbed a broom just in case.
I stood in front of the door full of fear, my legs were trembling and my heart was beating so hard that I thought it could jump out of my body at any time. It took all of my guts to open the door. By the time the door made a click sound, that hazy light instantly disappeared, and the room went back to its normal darkness. I used my flashlight scanning all over the place and stopped at a mess of my old toys on the floor. That’s when I knew someone was there. When I moved my flashlight onto the wall, I saw a three-foot shadow which I assumed was a short fat guy. While I got closer, I asked, “Who’s that?” There was no answer, but I heard a panting sound coming from behind a shelf. At that moment, I shined my light straight onto that thing; my heart missed a beat when the body evaporated into hundreds of fireflies shining all over the room. I dropped the broom and screamed. They flew over my head, condensed into the body again, then hid behind an old dresser. Now I could see the entire body clearly from its dim shine. It was not a guy, but actually a chubby body made of lights. His figure looked like a human as he had legs and arms, but there were only three toes and fingers. There was a lightbulb above his head which made him look like a lantern fish, and I thought that might be his heart. Surprisingly, his one big eye seemed terrified, and the shy look that he gave me made the situation a little ironic.
