ABSTRACT

The entire paper is based on the popular noble “The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The storyline is based on the characters Hester, Pearl, Roger Chillingworth, and Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester is the main character who had done adultery for that she wear scarlet with “A” letter written on it. Hester faced varied kind of punishments and straggles to live with her daughter Pearl in the society. At end of the story, Arthur Dimmesdale confessed that Pearl was his daughter and died during the confession on scaffold. The main attraction of this story was the persistence of every emotion such as love, anger, punishment, sin and judgment in a single piece.

INTRODUCTION

The Scarlett Letter is a classic drama and fiction work by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1850. In English literature, this drama was probably the greatest work of Hawthorne. It is a story of Hester Prynne and her struggles. This novel is a blend of love, romance, passion, sin, crime, punishment and judgment (Sheldon, “Nathaniel Hawthorne's the Scarlet Letter”).

The Scarlett Letter is based on the background of 1642 to 1649. In the story, Hester had came Puritan with her daughter Pearl. Hester Prynne got punishment from Puritan for her ‘adultery’. For this reason Hester wear a Scarlet with ‘A’ letter for her disgrace. Hester stand on scaffold for three hours, and she saw her husband Roger Chillingworth, who tells crowd to punish her for the adultery offence. Hester married to Roger Chillingworth, who is an older and a scholar. Roger Chillingworth sent Hester to Boston after marriage. Hester waited for her husband, but he had never gone there.
