Tsunami Poem by Sharon Esther Lampert
Sharon Esther Lampert is the author of the poem, Tsunami. Tsunami is a free verse poem which means it doesn’t conform to a regular meter or rhyme scheme. Sharon’s message to the reader is to be able to love and understand love, one needs to experience the dark times in their lives.
In the first stanza Sharon set the mood as depressing, sad and the fisherman were in pain. In stanza one, it says “How many tears can the ocean hold?” (Line one). The ocean is a symbolic for the people. Meaning the ocean can only hold so much before it will explode. That goes for us, people too we can only take so much before someone will explode out their feelings and pain. Sharon also used repetition in stanza one. It states “Little to eat, little to wear, / little to learn, too little to work.” (Line ten-eleven). This line means that the fisherman did not have a lot of objects in their lives or didn’t have an education as what other people might of have. There are some people in the world who have more items then what others will have.
In stanza two, Sharon set the mood as scared, tired, and feeling sorry for the fisherman. Sharon used auditory imagery she stated “An echo was heard, the little earth quaked.” (Line fourteen). This allows the reader to imagine what it sounds like when a tsunami is about to start. Sharon used visual imagery in her poem. She stated “Deadly waves, crashing ashore.” (Line seventeen).
