                Why I Deserve this Scholarship

Hello my name is Cathy Ann Clayton, and it is an honor to be selected by the University to apply for this scholarship. Eight years ago I would have never imagined that I would be continuing my college education. Due to a health crisis I went through, which we were not sure that I would make it. I came through with a lot of determination, and hard work. Although I am not a traditional college student, I should be accepted as a student and given the offered scholarship because I am a worthwhile choice: I have overcome obstacles, I can bring a new perspective, and I can demonstrate my financial need for the scholarship

As you know, I’m not your typical college age student. I am a 54 year old finishing my education, after overcoming a huge obstacle several years ago. It’s taken long time and a few boulders to climb over to get to this point. Eight years ago I had a nervous breakdown due to the loss of my father. This loss affected me tremendously, and I spiraled into a place no one should go. I have worked with a Psychologist to get through the dark place that I was in, which took many years. Two years ago my Therapist introduced me to a treatment, call Dialectic Behavior Therapy. Dr. Marsha Linehan created this therapy to help people think and respond to life differently.” DBT therapy is a broad-based cognitive-behavioral treatment developed specifically for Borderline Personality disorder.” (Linehan)  While working through the skills of: Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotional Regulation, and Distressed Tolerance. My life began to change as I implementing these skills. For example, 2 years ago, I attended a meeting. I was able to present my perspective in a clear, and concise manner, not becoming emotional by crying, or yelling. The outcome was very productive, in what all of us achieved. Overcoming these obstacles made me have more drive, which makes me a better student, and therefore, I should be accepted and given the scholarship.

In part because I have overcome these obstacles, I also feel I can bring a new perspective to the Psychology Program. With my insights I feel other students will learn that people with Mental Health issues can and do become productive members in society. Two years ago I was a client of Burrell Behavioral Health.  Today I have been given many opportunities from Burrell.  In August of 2014, the Director Dr. Paul Tomlinson ask me to represent Burrell at the Real Voice Real Choice conference. In May of 2015, I will be facilitating the DBT graduate class. This class teaches clients how to continue to use their skills in everyday life. Burrell has also ask if I would speak to others about Mental Health programs. I will be speaking with state representative, and Congressional representatives about funding. Also how to approach Mental Health funding with a preemptive view instead of waiting for a crisis.   The maturity and life experience I have, I believe I would be a good fit with the Psychology Program at the University.

In addition to the obstacles I overcome and the new perspective I bring, I am also a good candidate for a scholarship because I can prove financial need. Due to the eight years of being ill, things have been very difficult.  My husband was only able to work part time due to the fact that he had to care for me. Due to this change we have only been able to meet are basic financial needs, not a lot for extras. During this time we raised three wonderful children, two which are now married and on their own. Our youngest will be starting college in the fall. With the expense of her tuition, things are very tight. I have applied and do receive financial aid which doesn’t cover everything. This Scholarship would help with the cost of books, travel expenses, and would allow me to take a regular class load. Receiving this Scholarship would allow me to finish my BA without the stress of finances, after completing my BA I will continue on into the Master’s Program.  As a result of being ill, and my daughter attending college the need for the scholarship is great. However this journey I have been on, and the obstacles I have overcome gives me a determination that most college students don’t have.
