Artur Davis is a Democratic representative for the 7th district of Alabama. This district consists of twelve counties in Alabama, including the cities of Tuscaloosa, Selma, and the Black Belt region. It is a relatively poor area and it's major industries are healthcare, education, and paper products. Its population is around 544,117 the majority of the population being black, home owning, family households. Because the district was re-done to create a black majority, the once Republican district is now the only Democratic district in Alabama.
Artur Davis grew up in an impoverished Alabama neighborhood and is a product of the Montgomery public school system. Davis through his policies and sponsored legislation represents his district and their needs very well. His main focuses are on housing, education, and health care. Because the area that he is representing is impoverished, these are the things that matter most to them. Housing matters so much because everybody needs it. He has supported the goal of increased homeownershp in the United States and recognizing the importance of homeownership programs, fair lending laws, and fair housing laws to achieve that goal. One of the biggest pieces of legislation he sponsored was an amendment to allot 60 million to the HUD HOPE VI program. This needs to be changed and Artur Davis is working to do so. Healthcare is the main issue that he cares about though. Because his area has such a high percentage of elderly, he has worked hard to get them what they deserve. He has passed much legislation concerning health coverage and strongly advocated more federal funding for it. He has worked to reduce prices for Medicare drugs and even worked to insure veterans health care. Of all the legislation and programs Artur Davis promotes most fall in the health care area with a special attention to senior citizens. The University of Alabama falls in his district as well, which plays a large part in his decision to support healthcare legislation. His score is 23% by the National Taxpayers Union which means he is a big spender on programs and does not support tax cuts. He also favors more spending on armed forces based on his support of college recruitment and emergency money for the war in Iraq. He favors reduced use of coal, oil, and nuclear energy as well because he cares about the environment. Where will people go when the air is too polluted to breathe? Americans have to live here, and he believes we need to secure the future for all Americans. Other legislation he has supported includes
