Modernism is the overall art movement that started in the late 1800s and lasted to the mid-late 1900s. Artists of this time were primarily interested in how they presented their artistic ideas and issues rather than reproducing the world as it appears. Paul Cezanne is considered to be an important person at this time as he focused on planes and structure, as he painted a specific mountain over and over again to look at its physical structure and appearance.

Cezanne was influenced by impressionism, which originated in France in the 1860s, where paintings of casual subjects with color and brush strokes to capture the mood of the moment. With this new concept and his imagination, he was able to create a fresh genre of work that became popular after people wrapped their heads around it. He paved the way for other abstract movements, such as cubism, abstraction, conceptual art, and many others.
