Anna Karenina
The foreign film I selected to view and discuss is the movie Anna Karenina. I actually had to watch this movie a couple of times to fully understand the plot. The movie was basically an adaption of the book famously written by Leo Tolstoy. I really enjoyed the second time through I think I gained a better aspect of what the story was about. Throughout the movie you’re watching the lives of Anna Karenina and Konstatin Dimitrivich Levin unfold right in front of you. Anna is a very likable socialite who husband is a wealthy statesman while Konstatin is a wealthy landowner and a somewhat loner. The film is set in 1874 in Imperial, Russia. The story begins at Prince Stiva home in Moscow, Russia. Prince Stiva is caught by his wife Princess Dolly having an affair with his children governess from a note written to Stiva from the governess. Princess Dolly in return kicks Stiva out of the home and forbid him to see the children. This causes Stiva to call on his sister Anna to help talk sense into Princess Dolly and take him back. Anna ask her Alexei if she can travel to Moscow to intervene on her brother behalf. Anna son Seryohza begs her to stay she Anna leaves anyway.
During the next scene we see Stiva meeting an old friend Konstatin during this meeting Konstatin professes his love for Princess Kitty who happen to be Stiva sister-in-law. Stiva encourages him to propse to her. Konstatin is very devastated when she declines his offer. Princess Kitty is trying to hold out for Count Alexei Vronsky which would make her a rich socialite like Anna. During the arrival of the train you see Anna interact with Countess Vronskaya both ladies seemed to bond during the train ride. When arriving in Moscow Anna meets her brother Stiva but also meets Count Vronsky. You can tell there is a mutual attraction he even tries to impress her by paying for the expenses of the railroad worker who was caught underneath the train tracks and killed.
Konstatin is seen visiting his brother who gave up his inheritance to live poor with his wife who he met at a brothel. Konstatin then is seen returning home. Anna is trying to convince Dolly to take Stiva back at this time Princess Kitty invites her to the ball. Kitty dances with those who have filled her card but she really wants to dance with Count Vronsky. Vronsky decides to dance with Anna instead , during this time the spark between the both of is notice by onlookers and an upset Kitty. Anna leaves thinking that she upstaged Kitty on her night. Anna is seen leaving to St. Petersburg but Vronsky follows Anna but also declares that he wants her. She tells him to return to Kitty but he refuses.
Vronsky begins to follow Anna everywhere using his cousin Princess Betsy to carry on with his obsession. Anna begins to be amused with his approach. During a party Vronsky awaits for Anna but she arrives late thinking she was out of the clear of running into him. Vronsky shows back up and begin to openly flirt with Anna. The guest begin to gossip Alexei wants to leave at once, Anna decides to stay. Vronsky lets Anna know that he will take a promotion in another city. Anna begs him to stay. Anna arrives home to Alexei he wants to talk about Vronsky she denies the attraction and pleas her innocence to reassure Alexei he has nothing to worry about. The next scene she is seen making love with Vronsky.
Konstatin is seen at his estate where Stiva visits him to inform him that Kitty was no longer getting married. Konstatin
