Are Child Abuse and Later Criminal Activities Related?

Introduction

Background of the Problem

Since  the 1870s children have been being abused. Some people say that children who are abused are more likely to engage in criminal activities as a result. You also have other that say child abuse may not affect a person's life of the bad but it might make them want to be the opposite of the person who abuse them.

Clarification of Terms

Discipline is the practice of correcting a child who is being disobedient. Child abuse is when a person takes discipline to the next level and use excessive force to harm the child.

Statement of the Issue/Problem

Child abuse is against the law and is harmful. Many people growing up is abused as a child. Many people the the criminal involvement could be a result of child abuse. However, there are a lot of people who believe that criminal activities might not be the only outcome.

What do my sources say in answer to my research question about Child Abuse and Criminal Activities ? From what I have researched so far is that among the many people who are abused as a child majority of the victims do not engage in criminal activities.

  1. The majority of the children do not engage in criminal activities as a result of being abused but there are some that do. There are children who do commit crime later in life as a result of child abuse.(Jennifer Lanslord)
  2. Behavior consequences can also be an long term thing that people who are abused my go through. The impact of child abuse and neglect is often discussed in terms of physical, psychological, behavioral, and societal consequences.(Bryfonski)

Body Paragraphs

Studies done approximately 11 years ago says:

“An estimated 905,000 children were victims of child abuse or neglect in 2006. While physical injuries may or may not be immediately visible, abuse and neglect can have consequences for children, families, and society that last lifetimes, if not generations”(Bryfonski). However not all 905,000 children  participate in criminal activities.

The majority of the children do not engage in criminal activities as a result of being abused but there are some that do. There are children who do commit crimes later in life as a result of child abuse. Research shows that there is less people to engage in criminal activities versus the people who dont falling child abuse. Not all abused and neglected children will experience long-term consequences. Not all victims of child abuse and neglect will experience behavioral consequences. However, behavioral problems appear to be more likely among this group, even at a young age.
