“Flowers in Season”

Seasons come and go, as do stages of one’s life, which is what this story is about. The seasons are always changing and the signs of the changing seasons are the changing flowers. Flowers had great symbolism not just in their colors but their meaning; a connecting point for two people in mourning. The flowers went from a symbol of mourning to symbol of a bright and hopefully happy future relationship. Things that once represented sadness and loss soon began to represent a new hope for something better.

The flowers were not the only symbols that began to change meaning, the graveyard did as well. Typically a graveyard is thought of as dark gloomy, and sad, but after seeing the woman the graveyard became a place of anticipation. He found himself waiting for the woman in black, planning to visit his wife around the time she would be there, instead of concentrating on his wife. “After that, he saw her every Thursday. Sometimes she came before she did, sometimes later, but she kept faithful to Thursday. ‘It can’t be because of me,’ he told himself. Yet he would wait for her arrival with some faint emotion…” The graveyard became a place of visitation for the living, and an excuse to spend time with each other by sharing cab.

The ending was very abrupt and a little odd in that the women
