Written works become beloved classics because of the relatability of the themes and characters, no matter the era. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is an excellent example of a classic that has endured over time. Published over two centuries ago, the novel has multiple adaptations and parodies, appealing to readers across the globe. One character is especially relatable because she has a modern day counterpart. Lydia Bennet, the youngest of the Bennet sisters, shares many outrageous qualities with celebrity Kim Kardashian. Their mothers, Mrs. Bennet and Kris Jenner respectively, both have ambitious goals for their daughters. Mrs. Bennet desperately wants all five of her daughters married to a desirable match. Thus, she allows all of them to be available for courtship. Typically in the nineteenth century, younger sisters would not yet be introduced to society as eligible for courtship until after the eldest sister was married.
