The Birth of My Son - Personal Essay
The birth of my son was my motivation to go to college. I wanted to be able to provide a better life for him. Maslow’s hierarchy states, the levels of physiological needs that would motivate an individual to complete a task. I knew by receiving higher education I would be able to meet both the lowest and second level of the hierarchy theory. My previous job experiences is what drove me to choose sociology as my major. Throughout my childhood I traveled a lot so I became accustomed to being open minded to those of different cultures and beliefs. My gift of being able to understand and relate to people of different cultures is what motivated me to look into pursuing a career in the sociology field. I always found going to school fulfilling, because each day I learned something different. School was a task that I had no desire to give up on. I like to finish any task that I start. The self-efficacy theory states, how people’s belief about their own capabilities can affect their behavior. I knew with hard work and determination that I would graduate college and begin working in my career. I haven’t stopped attending college, because I’m too close to the finish line to quit. I will be graduating this fall and that will be rewarding to me. My son is my constant reminder that if I don’t finish strong that not only will I not be able to financially provide for him, but it could possibly motivate him not to graduate college.
