Ahupua’a Fishland and Poi
Ahupua’a Fishland and Poi
While watching this movie about Ahupu’a Fishland and Poi, it got me thinking. The Hawaiians definitely knew how to care for their water and land. Nowadays, we just run our baths continuously without caring about water because we think we have an unlimited supply but now after watching this video, it really makes me think twice about how fortunate we are. Especially because we live in Hawai’I, our water is definitely a lot more-clearer than the tap water in the mainland. The Hawaiian Ahupua’a system pretty much allowed access to all of the resources they had. Ranging anymore from the mountains, to the sea. The way the Hawaiian’s strategized such an ecosystem made sure that there was plenty of food going around. The uniquely specialized technologies like the fishpond and taro gardens made sure that they wouldn’t run out of resources. Another thing that I found interesting was how the ancestors knew how to split the balance not just between their own need’s but also the cleanliness and productivity of the land and sea. The ancestors made a system that allowed for the upcoming generations to learn the technique, use it, and survive with it. Back in the days, everything was probably hard to get things. Not only because there were no buses and taxis, but just because everything was had to be made from scratch. You couldn’t just wake up and say, “Oh, I need food. Let’s go to the fish market.” No. You had to wake up and actually earn things by yourself. I think we can all definitely benefit from this movie because we definitely can take a step back and learn about the traditional ways, instead of doing everything the modern way.
