Civilized Boys Also Go Corrupt

Lord of the Flies is a story of a group of boys who are stranded on a deserted island. As time progresses the boys start to figure some things out but they have gone too far from being civilized. The boys have become very unorganized and self centered to a point that they have become uncivilized and have a lot of evil in themselves. In the story Lord of the Flies Golding states that even civilized boys need to be rescued.

The boys wanted to be rescued from the island to go home. They have come to the realization that they cannot sit around and wait for everything to come to them. They have to go get it themselves. The boys decided that there was need of a fire; however making the fire was the easy part. [Pg. 49] All the boys helped out by gathering wood and putting it on a pile by the fire. Once they had the fire going, Ralph ordered that just the choir boys would watch the fire and it was their responsibility to make sure that the fire stayed burning. [Pg. 55] If there was a ship coming they had to make sure that there would be lots of smoke. Ralph should have made the boys take care of the fire in turns, he should have had all the boys put an effort into caring for the fire. For example, he should have the boys cycle through collecting wood and watching the fire.

The choir boys, those watching the fire, got bored because they only had to watch the fire so they decided to go out hunting. Ralph had also overlooked the problem that they needed food, he should have had a few boys go hunting for food. Ralph could have had the fire run low for a little while and have the whole group go hunting. If he the fire gone down for a while it would show that not everyone has to participate and that all their efforts are needed for survival. The boys should only go hunting when there is a need for food, not when there is a desire for hunting. If they go hunting when they want to go hunting, it will only make them have fun while killing things and that will lead to terrible consequences. The uncivilized boys are forgetting to be rescued.

While they were waiting to be rescued, Ralph realized that there was a need for tents and shelters. The boys though thought that this was a great big holiday and they didn’t want to work so they left just a couple of boys to build tents. The boys that are in charge of building the tents get very frustrated, "They're hopeless. The older ones aren't much better. D'you see? All day I've been working with Simon. No one else. They're off bathing, or eating, or playing."[Pg. 64] This quote shows that only a few of the boys actually care and the other half do not think outside of that moment, they just want to make their own lives happy and not care about the lives of the other boys. Life on the island becomes a great mess and the time progresses in the way that it is. The boys were in need of being rescued from the island, but have forgotten about it and they have become very self centered and do not care about the others. The boys are in need of being saved from the growing disorder on the island.

When the group of boys went out to kill the pig they get very excited about killing the pig. Once they got back to the camp they couldn’t stop talking about it, and how they killed the pig. It was a great big experience for them. “Look! We’ve killed a pig – we stole up on them – we got in a circle.” [Pg. 86] The boys were very excited about it and they all started talking about their own version of the story.

The older boys have become very disrespectful to the littluns. When Roger and Maurice come down from the mountain to go for a swim they walk directly toward the castles that the littluns have made. “Roger led the way straight through the castles, kicking them over, burying the flowers, scattering the chosen stones. Maurice followed, laughing, and added to the destruction.”[Pg. 76] This quote shows that the older boys have no respect for the littluns and they are just treating them like garbage, like they are just enjoyment for them. The older ones also do not respect the younger boys because they are throwing stones at them and intentionally missing.

At the end of the book it has become very evident that the boys are in need of being saved from growing disorder among themselves. The boys have killed two people and it does not have any effect on them because they are so use to killing animals. The boys have killed Simon and Piggy and are about to kill Ralph at the very end of the book.

The boys have been wondering what type of beast is on the island with them and they go all over the island trying to look for the beast. There was a paratrooper who had bailed out over their island and had died and they thought that the parachute was the beast. One day when Simon was out exploring he realized that the so called beast was a parachute. Simon went ahead and brought the parachute down
