Dance As Art Review
The performance uses refreshing elements that allows the viewers to know what is going on in the environment. For example, the space that was conducted in the performance had the narrator speaking through the intermissions of each scene that occurred and summarizing what each of the scene is going to be about or what went on. For shape, the dancers conducted a collective that formed a circle around each other and chanting different words while extending their arms in different directions. At first, I thought the timing of the performance was off because each dancer were talking to each other when they were saying those different phrases in a circle. Progressing towards to the end of the performance, I found that the timing started to make sense cause the dancers had different abilities, themes, and dancing. The energy of the performance seemed to be humorous, lighthearted, and meaningful. The dancers had intentional characters when they turned into superheroes. The interaction between the dancer was based on their identity and tends to focus on many characters at a time but there are times where one character is in the spotlight. The contrast between each dancer's style is based on the their superhero powers and I like how they added their own style every time they perform their powers.
To be honest in the beginning I was very confused to what is going on. I was unsure what the theme of the dance was but it led me to some clues that the dance was going to be a bit about super heroes because the narrator stated, "In a world..." but then when the performers danced in the their introduction, I felt confused. The conversation when the dancers were performing in a circle was strange to me. The part when the dancers were lining side by side of each other in order of the least privileged to the most privileged was sent a clear message about inequality was very impacting due to what is happening now in the present. One of the dances I would like to be in Capoeira because it is a form of dancing but it is also a defensive type of fight and rhythmic
